The Gate is a dog-friendly country pub in Bryants Bottom, surrounded by the beech woods, valleys and footpaths of the Chiltern Hills near Great Missenden. Dogs are welcome inside and out, so whether you are finishing a Chilterns walk or just out with the family, you and your four-legged friend can relax with a drink or a meal.
Dogs Welcome
Dogs are welcome everywhere at The Gate: in the bar, the dining areas and outside in the garden.
We have a few water bowls for dogs, and you are always welcome to bring your own. Ask at the bar for a complimentary dog treat.
Walkers Welcome
Muddy boots welcome. Knock the worst off on the steps outside, and please pop on a pair of the boot covers at the front door, as some of our floors are carpeted.
Parking: walkers visiting the pub are welcome to leave their car in our car park while they walk. There is parking at the front of the pub and an overflow car park at the side.
Walks near The Gate
These are official, published routes from the Saturday Walkers’ Club and the National Trust. Follow the publisher’s directions and map, and check their website before you set out, as routes and conditions can change.
Princes Risborough to Great Missenden
Saturday Walkers’ Club | 15.8 km (9.8 miles) | Station to station
A linear walk between Princes Risborough and Great Missenden stations, through Lacey Green and Bryants Bottom to Prestwood. The Saturday Walkers’ Club suggests The Gate as its lunchtime stop, about 9.3 km into the walk, and gives a direct road route to the pub if you would rather avoid a steep climb and descent.
Dogs: the route guide has no specific dog advice, so keep dogs on a lead around livestock.
Views of the Hughenden Manor Estate
National Trust | 5.3 miles (8.6 km) | About 3 hours | Circular | No stiles
A circular walk around the Hughenden estate with ten different viewpoints over the Chilterns countryside. Mostly soft footpaths, with some short but fairly steep climbs. Starts from the National Trust visitor kiosk at Hughenden (HP14 4LA).
Dogs: the National Trust says dogs can be off the lead in the woodland and parkland, but should be on a lead in areas with cattle and sheep.
Bradenham Beech Woods Walk
National Trust | 4.4 miles (7 km) | About 2 hours | Circular | No stiles
From the village of Bradenham into classic Chiltern beech woods and rolling valleys, passing ancient earthworks and wartime bunkers. Mostly soft footpaths with several short, steep climbs. Starts from the National Trust car park in Bradenham village (HP14 4HF).
Dogs: the National Trust says dogs are welcome but must be kept under strict control, as livestock graze on parts of the route.
Walking with dogs in the Chilterns
Chiltern paths cross working farmland, so please keep dogs on a lead around sheep, cattle and horses, and pick up after your dog. Paths can be muddy after rain, so good boots are a must. For more ideas, the Chilterns National Landscape website has information on exploring the area, and the Countryside Code has advice on walking with dogs.
